Scope and content:

The Nan Cooke Carpenter papers (circa 1930-1989) reflect her interest in music and literature. Included in the collection are musical compositions, an unfinished translation of a Renaissance musical treatise, biographical material, notes, and correspondence.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Nan Cooke Carpenter joined the faculty of the University of Georgia as a Professor of English in 1967. In 1970, she became the Chairman of the Comparative Literature Department and held this position until her retirement in 1980, as Professor Emeritus. Carpenter published four books and numerous articles and papers relating to music and literature. She received many honors including Phi Beta Kappa, Directory of American Scholars, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the Humanities and International Who's Who. Carpenter described her interests as "music and literature, especially medieval and Renaissance literature, British and comparative."

Custodial history:

These materials were originally part of a much larger group of materials collected by Nan Cooke Carpenter over her lifetime. The larger collection is found at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library in Charlottesville (Louisa County), Virginia. The Louisa County Library Foundation, Inc. donated a small amount of papers, UA05-006, to the University of Georgia Archives in 2005.
