Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of both original and copied documents that date from 1853 through 2004. These documents relate to fraternities and/or societies associated with the University of Georgia. The organizations are: Mystical Seven Society, Beta Theta Pi, and Thalian Dramatic Club.

Biographical / historical:

The Mystical Seven Society was founded at Wesleyan University in 1837. It is credited with introducing the idea of the college fraternity into the South and had considerable influence on the development of organizations in the Antebellum South. The branch at the University of Georgia, the Temple of the Skull and Bones, existed between 1846 and 1854. Beta Theta Pi's Epsilon Epsilon chapter at UGA was formed in 1984 but its roots go back to the 19th century Mystical Seven Society, The fraternity's mission is to build "men of principle for a principled life." The Thalian Dramatic Club was founded in 1893 at the University of Georgia and is one of the oldest chartered theatrical societies in America.
