Background

Scope and content:

The records consist of administrative correspondence, departmental memorada, minutes of the master's of social work subcommittee, an application for accreditation (1965), departmental self-studies, and photographs and scrapbooks documenting the school's history.

Biographical / historical:

Established in 1964, the UGA School of Social Work began with eight professors, twenty-four students, and one graduate degree program. President O.C. Aderhold recruited Charles A. Stewart, director of social services at Milledgeville State Hospital, to head the school as its first dean. Stewart developed of the school's bachelor and doctoral programs and retired in 1995.
