This collection has correspondence relating to the activities of the Prudential Committee from 1873 until 1928. The collection also has the minutes of the Prudential Committee dating from 1834 through 1857 and 1919 through 1931. The Prudential Committee records are a particularly good window into the daily administration of the University of Georgia during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1803, Hope Hull, Thomas P. Carnes and John Clarke appointed a Prudential Committee of the Board of Trustees to act for the Board in cases of emergency and advise the University president at all times in the interest of the Franklin College (University of Georgia). Since the Board of Trustees only met a couple of times a year, the day to day administration of the University was maintained by the Prudential Committee. In 1931-1932 the State University System was reorganized and the institute specific Boards of Trustees were replaced with a Board of Regents that had the responsibility of maintaining authority over all state-supported higher education in Georgia.
