Background

Scope and content:

This collection primarily documents the research and manuscripts of Thomas P. Lauth, who served as a faculty member at UGA from 1981 to 2013, first in the Department of Political Science and then as dean of the School of Public and International Affairs. This collection also contains Lauth's personal files which document his correspondence, valedicatorian speech, awards, service, personal notes, and an artifact series, which contains various local and national campaign signs.

Biographical / historical:

Thomas P. Lauth (1938-2023) Lauth served as an instructor in the Department of Political Sciece at Hofstra University from 1966 to 1973 and a professor in the Department of Political Science at Georgia State University from 1975 to 1981. In 1981, Lauth began his career at UGA as an associate professor in the Department of Political Science. Lauth served on the UGA faculty from 1981 to 2013 and led the Department of Political Science as its Head from 1988 to 2001. In 2001, he became the inaugural Dean of the University of Georgia's School of Public and International Affairs.

Lauth coninued to publish after his retirement. In 2021, he published the monograph Public Budgeting in Georgia: Institutions, Process, Politics and Policy.

He earned his B.A. in Government from the University of Notre Dame in 1960 and his PhD in Political Science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University.

Arrangement:

The papers are arranged in four series, one of which has been futher arranged in subseries. The contents of each series are primarily arranged chronologically, except for the artifacts series. The series and subseries arrangement of the papers is as follows:
