- Biographical / historical:
-
The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy began as Campaign for a Prosperous Georgia, formed in 1983, as a group opposing the construction of Plant Vogtle and its subsequent rate hikes. The group went on to file numerous interventions and appeals to the Georgia Public Service Commission against Georgia Power Company, and their work had an emphasis on spreading information on the harm of nuclear power plants. In the later 1990s to early 2000s, CPG's work expanded into researching and advocating for other forms of clean energy, as well as protecting air quality. In 2001, Campaign for a Prosperous Georgia changed their name to Georgians for Clean Energy, then merged with Southern Alliance for Clean Energy in 2003. The staff and interns continued their work advocating for clean energy, opposing nuclear and other power plants, and supporting a healthier environment in Georgia through youth education, public advocacy, lobbying, and interventions with the Georgia Public Service Commission.
