Background
- Scope and content:
-
This longleaf pine catface was removed from a farm in Lexsy, Emanuel County, GA started by Jordan Clinton Yeomans.
Pine resin is collected from a tree by removing the surface bark with a series of diagonal hack marks. As the tree releases resin to seal the de-barked area, the direction of the hack marks channel the resin into a container fixed to the tree. The term "catface," used to describe a section of a tree that has been used for resin harvesting, derives from the resemblance of the hack marks to the whiskers of a cat.
