Scope and content:

This collection consists of the personal papers of Linton M. and Josephine H. Collins. The collection documents Linton Collins' time at the Department of Justice and at the U.S. Court of Claims, and his research on the conscientious objectors' movement during WWII. The papers also includes Josephine Collins' personal papers and compiled legal and real estate files concerning the Hardman family property and historical preservation in Sautee Nacoochee.

Biographical / historical:

Linton McGee Collins was born in Reidsville, Tattnall County, Georgia, on June 21, 1902. He received an A.B. and Master's from Mercer University and taught in Georgia and South Carolina. He entered private practice in Florida before becoming a professor at the University of Miami. He was the personnel director and division administrator of the National Recovery Administration before beginning his service with the U.S. Department of Justice, where he was the first assistant to the Deputy Attorney General. Collins was nominated by President Lyndon B. Johnson to a seat on the U.S. Court of Claims in 1964 and served there until his death on April 12, 1972.

Josephine Staten Hardman was born September 30, 1910, the daughter of Georgia Governor Lamartine Griffin Hardman. She married Linton M. Collins in 1934. Josephine Collins served as the alternate delegate from Florida at the Democratic National Convention in 1936. She died on January 30, 1996.
