Scope and content:

The Beth English Collection of Disability History Materials contains items related to the Commissioner's Oversight Committee on which she served from 1996 to 1998. These materials include commission reports, project papers, and meeting agendas related to the closures of the Brook Run Center for the Mentally Retarded in 1997 and the Georgia Mental Health Institute (GMHI) in 1998. English's work as executive director of Easter Seals Southern Georgia and advocacy initiatives undertaken with other organizations and the state legislature for the benefit of people with disabilities are documented as well. Materials related to Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia, are also included, notably a scrapbook on the Mayor's Motorcade, an event sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association.

Biographical / historical:

Beth English has served in many capacities as an advocate for those with disabilities in the state of Georgia. She is the Executive Director of Easter Seals Southern Georgia, an organization that provides support services to children and adults with disabilities. In 1997 she served as a member of Department of Human Resources Commissioner's Oversight Committee that was formed to direct the closure of the Brook Run Center for the Mentally Retarded.

The collection is arranged into three series: Series I. Commissioner's Oversight Committee, Series II. Easter Seals and Related Advocacy, and Series III. Central State Hospital Materials.
