Biographical / historical:

On October 1, 1939, Battery "D" of the 214th Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Regiment, led by Commander Jere N. Moore, was organized in Milledgeville, Georgia. During the summer of 1940, the unit trained and held target practice at Fort Barrancas in Florida. On December 2, 1940, the unit was moved from Milledgeville to Camp Stewart, Georgia, to join the rest of the regiment. In June 1942, the 214th Regiment was moved to California as part of the defense of San Francisco. They remained in California until September when they shipped out on the USS Mount Vernan, to New Zealand. Battery "D" served in the Pacific Theatre, participating in the Battle of Guadalcanal, from 1942 to 1943. Throughout the war Battery "D" was reorganized numerous times, of the original 122 enlisted men and four officers only thirteen served together continually.
