Background

Scope and content:

This collection documents national political career of Congressman and United States Senator C. Saxby Chambliss. Most of the records in this collection were created by staffer's in the Senator's Washington D.C. and district offices as part of the routine work of legislating and representing the people of Georgia. The Saxby Chambliss papers document American politics and government during a key transition period, as the United States adapted to the developments of the 21st century.

Specifically, the collection contains a large volume of legislative subject files containing bill drafts, memos, correspondence, and associated research. This covers topics and events from the mid-90s to the mid-2010s such as the Global War on Terror, the Iraq War, abortion access, social security and medicare reform, and global climate change. The collection also includes administrative records and briefing books for CODELs, speeches, and the Senator's daily schedule.

Biographical / historical:

Clarence Saxby Chambliss was born in Warrenton, NC. He attended Louisiana Tech University from 1961-1962 before enrolling in the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1966. He received a JD from the Tennessee College of Law in 1968.

Chambliss was elected to represent the 8th Congressional district in 1994, part of the Class of '94 wave of conservative Republicans led by Newt Gingrich. In the House, Chambliss served on the Select Committee on Intelligence, where he participated in investigations of US intelligence service shortfalls leading up to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

In 2002, Chambliss ran for the US Senate, defeating the incumbent, Max Cleland. In the Senate, Chambliss chaired the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee from 2005-2007 and was the ranking member of the Select Committee on Intelligence from 2011-2012. As a Senator, Chambliss was recognized for his bipartisanship, including his leadership of the Gang of 10 and his work on the 2007 Farm Bill and Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (the 2008 "bank bailout"), averting a total collapse of financial markets.

In 2014, Chambliss announced that he would not seek reelection. After his retirement he became a partner at DLA Piper.

Arrangement:

This collection is arranged into three series: I. House, II. Senate, and III. Audiovisual.

Series I contains records from Chambliss' US House of Representatives office and is further subdivided into Administrative Records, Legislative Files, Press and Media Relations, and Constituent Services.

Series II comprises the Senate office records and contains the same subdivisions: Administrative, Legislative, Press, and Constituent Services, with an additional subseries for personal and political files.

Series III contains audiovisual recordings from the Senator's House and Senate careers. These items can be searched and accessed through the Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection at:

This collection contains audiovisual materials. Reference copies of the audiovisual recordings are available upon request. Research requests will be filled as soon as possible and will be dependent upon the condition of the recordings.

This collection contains digital files. To access these files, please request the folders you would like through the finding aid using your research account. An archivist will be in contact with you to explain how to access the files. Please note that not all file formats are currently supported by the library for research use.

This collection contains constituent case mail that has been restricted for seventy-five years from the date of creation of the record to protect the privacy of individual constituents. These records are not available to researchers until January 2, 2090.
