B. Campaign Files, 1960-1974

Scope and content:

This sub-series is arranged chronologically and includes advertisements, notes, clippings, correspondence, and memorabilia related to Merritt's campaigns from 1962 to 1974. The majority of the materials date from the 1964 campaign, one of Merritt's biggest campaigns during which she became the first woman to hold the post of state representative in the 68th district, and the 1972 campaign where she was defeated for re-election by her former colleague in the House, Oliver Oxford. Additional information about Merritt's campaigns can be found in the Personal series.
