This series is primarily composed of papers from Merritt's time serving in the Georgia State House, from 1964 to 1972, although it also includes a few items (correspondence with past colleagues, legislative publications, later additions to old notebooks) dating from after her 1972 re-election defeat by Senator Oliver Oxford. The legislative series is divided into six sub-series; correspondence is the most substantial of these. Topics covered in this series include a variety from fire ants, fluoridation, and mobile homes (in the correspondence sub-series) to political gossip (in the notes and schedules sub-series).
