Scope and content:

This collection contains photographs of the Bowden family at the launch of the USS Savannah in 1937, and newspapers featuring stories about Russell Bowden's brother, Senator Richard B. Russell.

Biographical / historical:

Frances Marguerite Russell, known as Margo or Dixie, was born April 11, 1896. She was the third child of Ina Dillard and Richard Brevard Russell Sr., born a little over a year before her brother, Senator Richard B. Russell Jr.

She married James Harris Bowden on June 24, 1920. The Bowdens lived in Savannah, where Marguerite was a teacher. The couple had four children: Marguerite Russell Jr., Jane Mayo, James Harris Jr., and Richard Russell (Senator Russell's cousin).
