Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of correspondence between Ina Russell Stacy and her friends and family; the personal papers of Ina and her husband, Captain Jean K. Stacy; photographs of the Russell family and friends; and scrapbooks and artifacts from Ina Stacy's home.

Biographical / historical:

Ina Dillard Russell Stacy was born June 22, 1894, in Athens, GA to Richard and Ina Dillard Russell. She was their second child, and the second-oldest sister of Senator Richard B. Russell Jr. From 1911-1913 she attended the Lucy Cobb Institute in Athens to become a teacher.

Ina was the first of the Russell family to move to Washington, DC, where she enjoyed a noteworthy professional career. During World War I, she served as a clerk in the Bureau of War Risk Insurance (now the Veterans' Administration). She received a law degree from the Washington College of Law at American University and was admitted to Georgia Bar in 1931. Though she never practiced law, she used her legal experience in her work as a claims adjuster in the Veterans' Administration. She frequently worked with her brother as his official hostess, including during his 1952 presidential primary campaign.

In 1938 she marred Jean Killough Stacy, a Captain in the Army Reserve. The couple lived together in Washington until Captain Stacy's death in 1955. The following year Ina retired from the Veterans' Administration and returned to Winder to live with the rest of her family. She died on May 13, 1991, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband.
