The Political series (1888-1938) consists of three subseries: A. Appointments, B. Campaigns, and C. General. Appointments contains letters from individuals requesting Russell's backing in order to gain a political appointment of some kind. Campaigns includes mostly correspondence pertaining to Russell's various campaigns for public and judicial offices (1898, 1904, 1906, 1911, 1916, 1922, 1926). General contains constituent correspondence and letters requesting political support from Russell. In this series, Russell expresses his opinion on many issues including the Ku Klux Klan, the World Court, agriculture, and foreign policy. There is correspondence with Tom Watson, Henry West, C. E. McGregor, and Emory Speer in Russell"s own 1911 gubernatorial campaign.

The Political series, in large, is a comprehensive record of Marcus's campaign for mayor of Atlanta. This was a close race, won by Andrew Young. There are also folders of other campaigns and of the National and Georgia Democratic Party.

This series documents McBee's political activities and includes files relating to her election campaigns, activities with the Women's Legislative Caucus, and speeches she has given at various events. This series is organized into four subseries: A. Campaigns, B. Women's Caucus, C. Speeches, and D. Appointment Books.

This series consists chiefly of materials relating to Smith's senate campaigns. Materials document the activities of communicating Smith's view on various issues and position through speeches, press releases, and newspaper columns. The series also includes materials Smith collected on organizing and operating a political campaign. The bulk of this series concentrates on the later years of Smith's senate career.

The Political series includes materials that relate to Lanham's campaigns for congress, as well as the presidential races of 1948 and 1952. The 1952 campaign includes correspondence regarding the "Hustle for Russell" club. These series contains materials documenting Lanham's segregationist politics, views on foreign policy, and fiscal policies. Materials include correspondence, newspaper articles, telegrams, press releases and campaign brochures. Arrangement is alphabetical.

Arranged alphabetically, primarily by the name of the town, with the exception of a few folders titled by subject, e.g., General Information or Mailing List. Materials are in reverse chronological order within each individual folder. Series is comprised of incoming and outgoing correspondence, telegrams, and clippings. The majority of correspondence is requests for assistance in obtaining mail delivery or extension of current service. Also included are requests for information regarding the civil service examination for those wishing to obtain rural mail carrier positions.

Ceremonies marking Bennett's retirement from the U. S. Department of State in 1985 are documented in this series. Papers indicating Bennett's leadership and participation In decision making of the North Atlantic Council and Atlantic Treaty Association are found here, as well as those of the United Nations, the Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis, and other diplomatic organizations. A set of lectures given for the Royal Viking Lines is included, as well as, correspondence with the University of Georgia concerning a teaching position.

The Press Series is arranged in eight subseries: A. News Clippings, B. News Releases, C. Reports from Washington, D. Radio Scripts and Statements, E. Constituent Mailings, F. Correspondence, G. Publications, and H. Audiovisual. Administrative Assistant/Press Assistant L. Selby McCash's files are represented in part in this series. Not all of his files were donated to the Russell Library, however.

This series contains programs, certificates, invitations (including those to the Wilson inauguration of 1913 and 1917), flyers, handouts, and brochures that relate to the political, social, and economic affairs of the Hughes family. A large subseries contains copies of news articles which provide important supplementary information to the events in Series I-III.

Related Materials are items that by physical form are not retained as part of the papers in the collection, but by content are related to the intellectual content of the papers. Any nontextual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audio/visual materials, memorabilia and scrapbooks; physical form determines arrangement and storage.
