John Forsyth (1780-1841) born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was a Congressman, U.S. Senator, Georgia Governor (1827-1829), and U.S. Secretary of State (1834-1841).

The collection consists of five letters signed "John Forsyth": dated Washington, February 23, 1824, to John O'Connor, regarding the presidential election in New York; dated Georgetown, February 25, 1825, to John Michael O'Connor, regarding the presidential election and ramifications of political activity; dated Washington, May 29, 1826, "Mr. James Barbour," regarding expenses paid by the Department of War to the Creek Nation; dated New York, [October 10, 1835], "My dear sir" [S. Dirkins?]; dated Washington, April 14, 1838, to "Robert Gilmer," regarding Gilmer's letter concerning the discharge of Joseph Cullen, U. S. Consulate at Tenerife.
