Collection Description

Historical Note

Cornelius Herbert Longstreet (1831-1901) served aboard the U.S. Bark Braziliera as an assistant paymaster during the American Civil War. Longstreet joined the Braziliera in the fall of 1862 after the ship joined the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and served until the war's end in 1865. He later pursued the citrus business and settled with his family in Mount Dora, Florida.

The U.S. Bark Braziliera joined the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron in 1861 but subsequently reported to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron on June 27th of 1962. There the Braziliera was stationed along the Georgia/North Carolina coast and captured four vessels while in squadron. The Bark Braziliera also assisted in the attack of the salt works on St. Simon's Island, Georgia, the lumber works on St. Andrews Bay, Florida, and the CSS North Carolina at Cape Fear River, North Carolina.

Scope and Content

Collection includes three journals by Cornelius Herbert Longstreet (1831-1901) documenting his experiences as an acting assistant paymaster on the U.S. Bark Braziliera, a blockader ship during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Also included is Longstreet's official letter copy book which covers his correspondence as a paymaster from 1863 to 1866 and a transcribed copy of his journal entries. Cornelius Herbert Longstreet's journals were transcribed in 1942 by his grandson Rubert James Longstreet (1892-1969) and compiled into a book titled "Journal of a Civil War Blockader". Rubert J. Longstreet's transcription includes occasional notes to provide identification or context to the entries.
