Collection Description

Historical Note

Violet Jackson (1925-2008) served in the U.S. 3700th Station Medical Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas during the Korean War.

George D. Tidwell (1927-1956) worked primarily as a training officer for the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. In 1951 he was assigned to the Arctic Survival/Arctic Indoctrination School at Ladd AFB near Fairbanks, Alaska. In 1952 Tidwell was transferred to the 449th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron as a supply officer.

Clay E. Kemp (1927-1998) worked at the USNAB Agana on Guam in the dispensary as a surgical assistant. He later became a pastor in the United Methodist Church.

Scope and Content

Collection includes letters from George D. Tidwell, an Air Force training officer at the Arctic Survival School, to his first wife Air Force nurse Lt. Violet Jackson. Tidwell's letters describe life at the school, his varying duties, his frustrations with those in command, and his affections towards Jackson. In addition are three photograph albums containing a total of six-hundred and twenty photographs. The first two albums belong to Lt. Jackson and document her service in the 3700th Station Medical Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas as well as her tour in Europe and her time at the Macon Hospital School of Nursing in Georgia. The last photo album belongs to Lt. Jackson's second husband Clay Kemp. Kemp's album details his time at the USNAB Agana on Guam where he worked as a Navy surgical assistant. Also included two U.S. Air Force telegrams, Lt. Jackson's U.S. Army Medical Field Service course certificate, an Air Force Reserve inventory questionnaire, Air Force Reserve qualification paperwork, and Stephen Tidwell Baptism certification.
