Historical Note

The newspapers in this collection all stemmed from two competing newspapers in Georgia in the mid-1800s: the Southern Banner and the Southern Watchman. In 1882, these two papers merged, becoming the Banner-Watchman. In 1889, the newspapers became known as simply "The Banner." In 1923, the Athens Banner joined with the Athens Herald, another competing paper, to form the Athens Banner-Herald.
