Historical Note

The UGA Board of Trustees established an art gallery in 1887 with the goal of receiving a portrait of every Trustee. These portraits were transferred to the Library in 1905. In the 1930s, the Permanent Committee on Memorials of the Alumni Society began documenting memorials across campus. Later the University established the Committee on Gifts and Memorials. The University Portrait Committee, originally run by the Art Department and later the Library, was responsible for the inventory and management of portraits across campus.
