Abstract: The Athens Music Project Oral History Collection is part of the Athens Music Project (AMP), a Willson Center for Humanities and Arts research cluster co-directed by Jean Kidula and Susan Thomas. Interviews in this collection document the development of Athens as a breeding ground for multiple musical communities--the most prominent of them being the Southern independent rock scene. Other areas to be documented include a variety of African-American musical traditions, hip-hop, jazz, bluegrass, folk music traditions, Latin music, new music and conceptual sound art, classical music, and musical theater, and AthFest.

Historical Note

The Athens Music Project Oral History Collection is part of the Athens Music Project (AMP), a Willson Center for Humanities and Arts research cluster co-directed by Jean Kidula and Susan Thomas. The Athens Music Project was founded in 2014 as a platform for research, creative development, and shared expertise in, about, and for the diverse musical communities that make the city of Athens.

Scope and Content

The Athens Music Project Oral History Collection documents the diversity and depth of Georgia music and culture, with emphasis on the Athens music culture and community--a community renowned for its cultivation of creativity and as a global destination for musicians. Interviews are conducted by partners from music communities, and UGA faculty, staff, and students.

Interviews in this collection document the development of Athens as a breeding ground for multiple musical communities--the most prominent of them being the Southern independent rock scene. Other areas to be documented include a variety of African-American musical traditions, hip-hop, jazz, bluegrass, folk music traditions, Latin music, new music and conceptual sound art, classical music, and musical theater. A subseries (AMP-005--AMP-009, AMP-011--AMP-012) documents the development of AthFest, and annual 3-day music festival supporting music and arts education.

Sam Mixon talks about his early affinity for music, taking piano lessons, and teaching himself how to play drums, guitar, and the bass guitar. He remembers how working as a DJ for the local radio station and selling records in his father's store influenced him musically. He remembers how playing covers of songs shaped his experimentation with different genres of music and his understanding of what makes the structure of music. He recalls his time at the University of Georgia, during which he lived with fellow musicians and played in various bands like Flaming Chopsticks and Doo Blan Tant and his goal of creating original music. He recalls his practice space in the old Stitchcraft factory off Oconee Street, and compares the Athens music scene in the early 1980s with that of 2016. Mixon discusses the formation of the band Porn Orchard with fellow musicians Curtiss Pernice and Ted Hafer in 1986, their songwriting process, and touring with the band. He recalls the 2001 tour with his band Sunshine Fix that coincided with September 11, and memories of the aftermath of the attack. Following Porn Orchard's breakup in 1992, Mixon worked on pre-production for Vic Chestnutt's record Silver Lake, and he talks about Vic Chestnutt as a musician and songwriter. Mixon describes how playing music is like a conversation. He recalls his high school best friend, and their different experiences with songwriting.

Sam Mixon was born in Macon, Georgia in 1962. He grew up in Washington, Georgia where his father owned a variety of businesses, including Mixon Discount where Mixon worked at an early age selling records. He also worked as a DJ at WLOV, the local radio station, and as the bass player in a country music band throughout high school. In 1981, he started at the University of Georgia, and during his time in Athens, Georgia, he played with different bands, including the Flaming Chopsticks of Death, Doo Blant Tant, and Porn Orchard.

Eugene Willis, Jr., aka Blacknerdninja, talks about working at an early age doing odd jobs, drawing comics, and spending a lot of time in the Spring Valley neighborhood of Athens where his grandmother lived. He talks about starting to write raps, deciding to pursue music, and releasing his first CD entitled Home Remedy in the tenth grade. He talks about his relationship to Lo' Down and Duddy, another rap duo in Athens, and the explosion of the hip-hop and rap music scene in Athens in the late 1990s. Willis talks about the evolution of the hip-hop scene from 1996 onward, including the battle rap scene, the influence of the Underground Sound label, and the Dreaded Mindz hip-hop group. Willis also discusses the internet's impact on audience participation, the relevance of live performances, and the oversaturation of the local market. He recalls the three-year period he took off from rapping and the subsequent birth of his new identity as Blacknerdninja in 2010, his breakout perfomance, performing together with Larry Gresham, Jr. aka LG, and his musical influences. Willis discusses the impact of the 2012 inauguration of the Hip-Hop Awards in Athens, Georgia on representation of local hip hop artists. He discusses the business side of hip-hop and the need to invest in supporting artists. He talks about his family and balancing family life and music.

Eugene Willis, Jr. was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. He graduated from Cedar Shoals High School in 2000, and his first record release was entitled Home Remedy. He has performed under the names Lil Gene and Blacknerdninja.

AMP-019 Larry Gresham, Jr. (L.G.) interviewed by Jasmine Mokah Johnson

Larry Gresham, Jr., aka LG, grew up in Athens, Georgia, and fell in love with music very young, when he sang in the church choir and was influenced by his father's music tastes. He started writing his own songs around 1996. Gresham recalls trying to join and finally being accepted into the group Too Fly, which consisted of Eugene Willis' (aka Blacknerdninja) younger brothers and cousin. He talks about how the collaboration between himself and Willis came about, how the Athens hip hop scene has changed over the years, and his and other artists' efforts to grow the hip hop scene in Athens and increase collaboration and camaraderie between artists. Gresham also comments on his work outside of music and his involvement with his church choir and coaching basketball at Cedar Shoals High School.

Larry Gresham, Jr. was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. Gresham produces and performs locally, and has collaborated multiple times with Eugene Willis, Jr. aka Blacknerdninja, another local hip-hop artist.

AMP-020 Carlos Jones (Lo' Down) interviewed by Jasmine Mokah Johnson

Carlos Jones, who performs under the name Lo' Down, talks about his early performances in Athens, releasing his first album Between the Hedges with friend Ken Richardson (Duddy Ken), and leaving college to pursue his music career in Atlanta. Jones recalls how he and Richardson became a group, and how their connection to Bubba Sparxxx, a rapper at the University of Georgia, put them in touch with other industry players. Jones traces the growth of his music career and the influence of their group in the nascent hip hop scene in Athens during the early 2000's. He discusses his relationship to Athens, how the town reinforces a racialized mentality, and the limitations of Athens as a place for the growth of a hip hop industry. Jones concludes the interview by talking about his musical influences and stepping away from performing music.

Carlos Jones was born in Athens, Georgia. He briefly attended Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida, but left to pursue his music career in Atlanta with his friend and collaborator, Ken Richardson (Duddy Ken). Together they formed the group Lo' Down and Duddy, and released two albums. Jones has also worked independently under a separate name and label, as well as a ghostwriter and music producer.

AMP-021 Ismeal Cuthbertson (Ishues) interviewed by Dennis Knowa Johnson

Ismeal Cuthbertson talks about the culture shock he experienced when moving to Athens, Georgia, and compares the violence between Athens versus the other big cities he's lived in. He talks about his early hip hop influences like Canibus and Fort Knox, his move to New Jersey after graduating high school, and the training and experience he acquired during those years away. He recalls moving back to Athens, building up recognition as an artist, and working with Hano Leathers and Fort Knox as his management team. He recalls that the only Athens venues that supported hip hop in the early 2000's were the Athens Music Factory (no longer in existence) and the 40 Watt. Cuthbertson talks about being active in the battle rap scene in Atlanta, working with the Attica Sound label, and touring and performing nationally with rapper KRS-One. He recalls performing at Music Midtown and internationally in Germany, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Cuthbertson also reflects on his decision to stop performing and focus on his family. He gives advice to future artists regarding balancing their music careers and personal life, and comments on hip-hop in Athens in 2016, the fragmentation of the black community in Athens, and how the internet has changed the nature of music exposure.

Ismeal Cuthbertson was born in Washington, D.C. and moved to Athens, Georgia at fifteen. He left Athens to move back to New Jersey after graduating high school, and later moved back to Athens again, where he began performing locally and in Atlanta.

AMP-022 Andrew Rieger interviewed by Curtiss Pernice

Andrew Rieger talks about becoming a music fan at a young age, his first band, and starting the band Elf Power when he moved to Athens, Georgia for school. He talks about choosing to do home versus in-studio recordings, collaborating briefly with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann, and touring internationally, especially on repeated tours in Spain. Rieger describes the list he keeps of every live performance he has seen, and how it serves as a reference for other musicians. He reflects on the definition of success, managing his own label Orange Twin, and the growth of the entrepreneurial mentality in music production. He talks about collaborating with Vic Chesnutt, teaching classes for the University of Georgia Music Business Program, and compares the music distribution models in the digital age to the music exposure in the 1980s.

Andrew Rieger grew up in Greenwood, South Carolina and attended the University of Georgia in the early 1990s. He and Laura Carter started the band Elf Power, which was an original part of the Elephant 6 Recording Company. Rieger manages the music label Orange Twin and teaches classes at the University of Georgia Music Business Program.

Frank MacDonell talks about growing up in the suburbs, taking guitar lessons, forming his high school band, Aftermath, and getting his first Les Paul guitar. MacDonell working for a real estate company after graduating high school, and getting exposure to bands in Athens. He remembers being inspired by the band, Bar-B-Q Killers, deciding to quit his job and move to Athens to play music, and forming the band Magneto. He describes the atmosphere of friendly competition in the Athens music scene, releasing his first record, his first studio recording experience, and playing in various bands over the years, including Poolside, Tom Collins, and The Glands. He recalls Poolside's close encounter with stardom after being in talks with L.A. producers, and why it didn't work out. He goes into more detail about The Glands and their lead singer and songwriter, Ross Shapiro, as well as MacDonell's partnership with music engineer, David Barbe, and de describes the guitars he has owned over the years and where he bought them.

Frank MacDonnell grew up in Sandy Springs, Georgia and moved to Athens in his early twenties to play music. He has played guitar in multiple Athens bands, including Magneto, Poolside, Tom Collins, and The Glands.

AMP-024 Montu Miller interviewed by Jasmine Mokah Johnson

Montu Miller talks about growing up in a culture of hip hop, his early involvement in the Athens hip hope scene, and while in college founding the group Dreaded Mindz which hosted weekly poetry and rap events in his apartment. Miller discusses the climate and perceptions surrounding hip hop in the early 2000s, the difficulty of finding receptive downtown venues, and Dreaded Mindz' role in growing the local hip hop movement. He mentions some of the group's original members, women's role in the organization, and the support of the Tasty World club as a hip hop venue. Miller discusses the need for a meeting place for different styles of hip hop, the impact of the Athens Hip hop Awards, and the growing incorporation of hip hop includes partnering with musical festivals, schools, and organizations and working behind-the-scenes to grow the Athens hip hop scene.

Montu Miller was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and attended the University of Georgia. He was a founder of the Athens group Dreaded Mindz, and is a music promoter in Athens since the early 2000s.

AMP-025 Benjamin Edwards (Big Body) interviewed by Jasmine Mokah Johnson

Benjamin Edwards, who performs under the name Big Body, talks about his childhood in the West Athens neighborhood of Newtown, his early hip hop influences, and starting to record music in college. He talks about dropping out of school, going to prison, and maintaining his relevance in the hip hop scene. Edwards recalls the division that existed between different types of hip hop, its increaed dissolution over time, and the current hip hop scene in Athens. He also discusses his thoughts about success, his mentoring of young artists in Athens, and his advice to them about work ethic and authenticity in producing music. He also mentions the role of the university as a networking resource for Athens music artists.

Benjamin Edwards grew up in the Newtown neighborhood of Athens, Georgia. After briefly attending Elon University, he returned to Georgia and released his first single in 2003 under the name Big Body.

Earl Arnold, aka Big Earl, talks about his early life in Harlem, collaborating with rapper Big Al, living in the Bethel Homes apartments (known as B-Town) in Athens, Georgia, and releasing music with the group Big Earl and the Twin boys. He compares his sound to that of Lo' Down and Duddy, another Athens hip-hop group. He talks about releasing his solo album Life on the Line, moving to Los Angeles to produce music, and returning to Athens. Arnold talks about pairing up with Trap Boy in 2012, the Athens Hip-Hop Awards as a platform for artist recognition, and the potential for cultivating mainstream artists in Athens. He also reflects on his songwriting and recording process and the importance of teamwork in producing music.

Earl Arnold, aka Big Earl, was born in Harlem, New York, and settled in Athens, Georgia where he started releasing music in the late 1990s. He first released music as part of the group Big Earl and the Twin Boys, including the release of an eponymous album in 1998.

Darrison Ellison was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. He discovered hip-hop and rap while in middle school, where he was active in school performances. Ellison served in the military from 1989-1995, after which he was involved in the Athens music scene as a rapper under the name, Elita tha Showstoppa. In this interview, Ellison talks about his first introductions to music, reflections on rap in the community, record deals, and different hip-hop scenes.

Ken Richardson was born in Athens, Georgia and grew up in the Nelly B neighborhood on the eastside of Athens. He wrote his first rap while in middle school and later adopted the performance name Duddy Ken, through which he wrote and produced music with different groups like Lo' Down and Duddy and Underground Sound. AMP-029 Walter Allen, Sr. interviewed by Fred Smith

Walter Allen, Sr. grew up in Allendale, South Carolina, in the era of Jim Crow. The area was a close knit farming community, and Allen recalls learning principles of responsibility and discipline from his parents, neighbors, and teachers at Allendale County Training School, an all-black public school. While he also took classes on agriculture and home economics, Allen valued his music education most highly. Because of widespread discrimination, Allen saw and experienced many racially-motivated injustices during his school years, which became a factor in his advocacy for black music education, which he promoted by establishing free after school music programs throughout the state of Georgia. In the interview, Allen chronicles his own music education, beginning in primary school and extending through his time in college, the military, and band directing.

Walter Allen, Sr. was born and raised in Allendale, South Carolina. He graduated high school in 1947 and attended Claflin University, a historically black college in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Allen played trumpet in the 36th Army Band during his service in the Korean War. After military service, Allen moved to Athens, Georgia, where he was the band director at Athens High and Industrial. Allen also worked as an assistant principal at different schools as the Athens' school system during the desegregation period.

Creston Spiers was born in Monroe, Louisiana. He studied orchestra and performance percussion at John Hopkins University and later moved to Athens. Spiers played guitar and drums in the bands Weasel Stick and Harvey Milk. Peter Alvanos grew up playing the drums and guitar in Charleston, South Carolina. He went to college in Charleston and played drums in the band, Lines Thicken.
