He was raised working on his family's dairy farm before entering the University of Georgia as a Dairy Science undergraduate major. After receiving his Bachelor's in Dairy Science in 1954, DuVall spent two years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky and the Panama Canal. After his two-year ROTC obligation in the U.S. Army, DuVall took on the position as a county agent in Carrollton, Georgia which marked the beginning of his three decade career in Cooperative Extension.
