Dupree Hunnicutt, Jr. was born in Athens, GA, August 1, 1914, a son of the late Deupree and Gabriella Lanier Hunnicutt, Sr. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia BA and LLB degrees Phi Beta Kappa. He was a State Representative in Clarke County, GA from 1938 until 1942, when he entered the Army and served in U.S. Intelligence. He had been the Chairman of the Democratic Committee in Harrison, NY. He worked as an Attorney.
The collection consists of papers from the Dupree Hunnicutt house, Milledge Avenue, Athens, Georgia, including bank statements, cancelled checks, stubs and receipts, insurance statements, letters, etc., from 1900-1946. Athens businesses represented include: Auto and carriage shops, blacksmith shops, clothing stores, cotton mills, doctors, drug stores, dry good stores, electrical companies, furniture companies, grocery stores, jewelry stores, hardware stores, lumber companies, plumbing companies, roofing companies, shoe stores and undertakers. Also included are four letters and a copy of a will from the Long family, 1933-1946, and a notebook with an English translation, by Dupree Hunnicutt, from a Latin play.
The collection is organized into 2 boxes which contain a total of 24 folders. Box 1 contains: 1. Auto and carriage shops, 1908-1914. 2. Banking, bank stub books, 1907-1945. 3. Miscellaneous papers - Correspondence, house plan, notes, printed material. 6. Plumbing, roofing, general job shops, 1907-1913. 7. Printing shops, 1908-1909. 8. Salem Academy, North Carolina, 1912-1913. 9. Shoe stores, 1907-1914. 10. Translation of Latin play into English (notebook). 11. Wholesale grocery stores, 1909-1914. 12.
