Henry L. Mencken (1880-1956) was a controversialist, humorous journalist, and pungent critic of American life who powerfully influenced U.S. fiction through the 1920s.

The collection consists of three newspaper clippings and two letters from H. L. Mencken to Ned Lee. Two newspaper clippings (undated) concern Mencken's illness and retirement. Letters (dated 1933) poke fun at the Mississippi Bible Belt, and one of the newspaper clippings is an editorial from The Webster Progress, Eupora, Mississippi, regarding Henry L. Mencken, and contains the letter Mencken wrote to Lee.
