Collection Description

Historical Note

Isaac S. Vincent was Captain in the 1st Regiment of Georgia Volunteers stationed at Cedar Town, Georgia. He helped oversee the removal of the Cherokees in 1838; he was employed "in removing the Cherokee Indians, and protecting the people of the States against Indian hostilities." He was Clarke County's first casualty of the Civil War and was killed in action. He is buried locally at the Oconee Hill Cemetery.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers of Captain Isaac S. Vincent from 1837-1839. Papers include correspondence, military orders, provision returns, and a muster roll (May 14, 1838) relating to Vincent's command of the 1st Regiment of Georgia Volunteers while stationed at Cedar Town, Georgia during the removal of the Cherokee Indians from Georgia. The provision returns (1838) are for both troops and Indian prisoners.

Vincent; order to Vincent for command not to fire a gun or pistol during stay, New Echota, 23 May 1838; order 34, New Echota 24 May 1838 about collecting Indians and provisions for each Indian; order 8 telling Commanders to report General Floyd the number of Indians brought in or surrendered - report twice a week; order 30, re sick Indians, provisions for humans, horses and ponies; and New Echota 31 May to Capt.
