Historical Note
The door knocker in this collection was mounted on the original Dahlonega Mint building in 1837. The building was closed in 1861, but the door knocker was removed and sent to the New Orleans Mint, where it was used until that mint closed in 1909. When the New Orleans Mint closed, an official associated with the mint removed the door knocker and took it with him to Gadsden, Alabama. After learning that his doctor's wife, Susan Bass, was the great-granddaughter of Dr. Joseph J. Singleton, the first superintendent of the Dahlonega Branch Mint, the unnamed official gave the knocker the Mrs. Bass as a gift. Mrs. Bass passed the door knocker down to her daughter, Francina Bass Perrot, when she and her family moved to Georgia.
Scope and Content
This bronze eagle door knocker was once mounted on the front door of the original Dahlonega Mint building.
