Collection Description

Historical Note

Art Rosenbaum (1938-2022) was a painter, muralist, and illustrator, as well as a collector and performer of traditional American folk music. Born in Ogdensburg, New York, he earned his AB in Art History and his MFA in Painting at Columbia University. He began teaching at the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art in 1976, and continued to paint professionally throughout his career as an educator. Rosebaum's paintings are part of collections at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Columbus (GA) Museum, the Georgia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Rosenbaum also collected and performed traditional American folk music. His documentary recordings were released as a boxed set titled Art of Field Recording Vol. I: Fifty Years of American Traditional Music Documented by Art Rosenbaum, for which he won a Grammy in 2008. He was married to Margo Rosenbaum, a professional photographer.
