Collection Description

Historical Note

Clovis "Coke" G. Talmadge was born in 1845 to William A. Talmadge and Sara Young Talmadge. He served as a captain during the Civil War and married Georgia Virginia McDowell, daughter of Daniel and Martha King Wellborn McDowell, in 1863. Clovis would go on to found a wholesale grocery business with his brother John and serve as mayor of Athens, Georgia from 1876-1877 and in 1880.

Clovis and Georgia's daughter Margaret Talmadge married William Rutherford Lipscomb, the son of Francis Adgate Lipscomb and Mary Ann Rutherford Lipscomb.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the papers of the McDowell, Talmadge, Lipscomb, and Rutherford families including correspondence, ledgers, Civil War documents, and a will related to the McDowell family and Clovis Talmadge; the diary of a Union soldier; clippings; and photographs related to the Lipscomb and Rutherford families. The bulk of the collection is comprised of the correspondence of Georgia McDowell Talmadge and her husband Clovis Talmadge during and immediately following the Civil War. Transcriptions of the almost all of the correspondence and the will are included.
