Collection Description
Historical Note
Craig Barrow, III, a University of Georgia graduate, has maintained his ancestral home, Wormsloe, as well as over 2,000 acres of land along the Ogeechee River in South Georgia. Since 1980, Barrow has purposely purchased contiguous tracts of land along of the Ogeechee River and consulted many experts to restore and protect the area's trees, plants, and wildlife. His environmental and historic preservation efforts have been recognized by many organizations including the Ogeechee River Keeper, Georgia Museum Association, Georgia Historical Society, King Tisdell Cottage Foundation, Georgia Humanities Council, Georgia Southern University, and the University of Georgia.
Scope and Content
This collection contains the files of Craig Barrow, III including legal records, surveys, maps, correspondence, and newspaper clippings related to legal disputes regarding his property along the Ogeechee River. The bulk of the collection is focused on his efforts to stop the city of Guyton, Georgia from creating a sewage treatment facility next to his land on the basis that the facility would pollute the area. The other dispute regards the pollution of the Ogeechee River by King America Finishing, Inc.
