Colonel Richard Dennis was born in New Jersey on July 5, 1771. In 1794, he moved to Savannah, Georgia where he became a merchant and Major of the 1st Battalion 1st Regiment Georgia militia. Although he would leave Savannah in 1804 or 1805, he maintained his ties to the city and visited over the years. He served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the War of 1812 and was promoted to the rank of Colonel. He died on November 8, 1845 while visiting Louisville, Kentucky.
This collection contains the papers of Colonel Richard Dennis and his family. The majority of the collection is comprised of correspondence, but it also includes genealogical information, legal and land documents, and ephemera. Much of the correspondence involves Dennis' business and the settlement of his estate and property in Georgia following his death in 1845. Additional subjects covered include Savannah's economy during the War of 1812, gold mining in Georgia, and the sale of people he enslaved.
