Samuel Edward Butler (1748-1809) married Elizabeth Wingfield in 1770. In 1784, Samuel E. Butler travelled from Virginia to Georgia on horseback to purchase land. He purchased 400 acres on Uptons Creek from Joel Williams.
The collection consists of the diary of Samuel Edward Butler from 1784-1786. The diary was kept while Butler made trips between Virginia and Georgia. The entries reflect his observations regarding a myriad of topics including farming, hunting, slavery, the aftermath of the American Revolution, and Native Americans. The collection also contains several surveyor's maps of property held by the Butler family in Wilkes County (Ga.).
