The stereoscope allowed two images to be viewed as one image in order to create a three-dimensional illusion. The firm Underwood and Underwood created travel series of stereoscopic views that allowed the viewer to take a visual tour of a foreign place. The stereoscopes were images of people, historic sites, cities, landscapes, industry, agriculture, etc.
This collection contains 147 stereoscopic view cards. Included are images attributed to the American Stereoscopic Company, James M. Davis, Keystone View Company, and Metroplitan Syndicate Press. Subjects include people and places throughout the world, Bible stories, and World War I scenes, both in black and white and color. Also included is a box of modern birthday cards with stereographs printed on the front called Peep Show cards.
