Charles James Oliver (1831-1911) was a Methodist minister from Athens, Georgia. He enlisted on August 6, 1862 and served as a chaplain of Troup Artillery. He was slightly wounded in the arm and face on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg. He was appointed chaplain of Cabell's Artillery Battalion on September 12, 1864. He died on March 2, 1911 and is interred in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens, Georgia.
Collection consists of one letter written by Charles J. Oliver, a chaplain in the Confederate army, to his mother from his station in Raccoon Ford, Virginia. Although undated, the letter is believed to be from 1864 because this was the only time during the Civil War that the Troup Artillery was stationed at Raccoon Ford. In the letter, Oliver writes about missing home, daily activities, and the his duties as chaplain of his unit.
