Cyrus Chapin served in the 10th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War, he saw action in Dalton, Rome, Dallas, Acworth, and was wounded at the base of Kennesaw Mountain on June 20, 1864. He was taken to an Army hospital in Quincy Illinois where he wrote an account of his wartime experience.
The collection consists of a journal and a Chapin family record which spans the years 1760-1962. The journal is a history of his experiences in the Atlanta Campaign, where he was wounded at the base of Kennesaw Mountain on 20 June 1864. It appears to have been written while he was convalescing at the hospital in Quincy, Illinois. Also of note is a page from the journal being a handwritten diploma from 26 June 1862 for Charlotte A. Cothran of Rome, Georgia, possibly indicating that the journal was taken when Chapin was in occupied Rome.
