Collection Description
Historical Note
Rose Hill Plantation's original cottage was built by Colonial governor Stephen Heard in 1787, and incorporated into the house, built by his son Thomas Jefferson Heard in 1810. Extensive gardens were planted surrounding the house at that time. In 1898, Sallie Harper Heard partnered with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad to create a traveling library operated from Rose Hill that served rural communities along the railroad's route until 1955. Originally a part of Washignton County, it is now in Elbert County, near Elberton, Georgia.
Scope and Content
This collection contains photographs, clippings, historic writing, and detailed auction material regarding this property. Also included are writings and photographs of the Seaboard Air Line Free Traveling Library System that began at Rose Hill Plantation, as well as other papers kept by one of its librarians Elizabelle Langston Swift.
