Jessie W. Barnett (1913-2010) was a community organizer involved in anti-poverty and civil rights efforts in Athens, Georgia beginning in the 1960s. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church where she helped start the Community Adult High School. She was a founding member of the Athens Area Human Rights Council and a founder of the Clarke Community Federal Union. She was also an outreach worker for Action, Inc., Center Director for Clarke County Nutrition Project for the Elderly, and was proactive in getting Athens involved with the Model Cities Program, an element of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty.
The collection consists of documents, photographs, and clippings related to Barnett's work with organizations and programs such as the Athens Community Council on Aging, Inc., and the Model Cities Program.
