Historical Note
The Battle of Fort Pulaski was fought April 10-11, 1862. Union forces conducted a 112-day siege before capturing Confederate-held Fort Pulaski resulting from a 30-hour bombardment. Colonel Charles H. Olmstead was the Commander of the fort.
Scope and Content
Colonel Olmstead writes to Captain E. P. Lawton to inform him that Major General David Hamlin of the Federal Army sent a communication demanding the immediate surrender of Fort Pulaski to the forces of the United States at Tybee Island. Olmstead informs Hamlin that he sent word he would not surrender, and shortly thereafer the Fort came under attack, which continued throughout the night. Cut off from relief, Olmstead eventually yields the fort.
