Colonel David Jarrett Chandler (1925-1995) was the son of Colonel Farish Carter Chandler, Sr. and Lizzie Davis Chandler (nee Ramsay). His maternal grandparents, Captain Andrew Ramsay and Mrs. "Zaidee" Jarrett Ramsay were pioneer settlers of Toccoa. He was President of the Toccoa High School Senior Classs of 1941, an Eagle Scout, and attended North Georgia College prior to entering the Army in 1943.
Under the auspices of Senator Richard B. Russell he won a competitive appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point graduating in the class of 1949. During his twenty years of military service he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Germany, and served in Korea and Vietnam. He was Professor of Military Science at the University of Mississippi and Texas A&M during his active military career.
He became a teacher in the Oxford, Mississipi School system upon completion of his military career. He retired from teaching in 1990. He was a member of Toccoa Presbyterian Church, West Point Leadership Council, National Education Association, and the Mississippi Education Association.
Chandler had a wife, Sara, and two children, Elizabeth and George, as well as a brother, F. C. Chandler and two grandchildren. Chandler passed away in 1995.
The collection consists of one bound volume of the genealogy of David Jarrett Chandler, apparently compiled in the late 1960s or early 1970s. The genealogy covers both Chandler's paternal and maternal (Ramsay) lineage. Chandler's most frequently cited source is a conversation with his mother in 1969.
