Carhart & Roff was a merchant firm based in Macon, Ga., founded in 1841. The firm operated a wide-ranging general supply trade throughout Georgia. Carhart & Roff was named for its originators and principal investors, Elijah H. Carhart (1827-1885) and Aaron A. Roff (1815-1880), both of whom hailed from New Jersey. Elijah H. Carhart had several brothers who worked as grocers in Brooklyn, N.Y.
One business ledger maintained by merchants Carhart and Roff which covers accounts from 1853 to 1858. Approximately the first half of the ledger, covering 1839-1840, was maintained by a businessman whose identity is unclear, but was likely James Dunham Carhart, an older relative of Elijah Carhart. Items listed are perishable goods, including coffee, tea, tobacco, and liquor, named along with prices, clients and locations that include Macon, Savannah, and New York.
