Collection Description
Historical Note
Furman Bisher (1918-2012) began his career in journalism as the editor of the Lumberton (N.C.) Voice in 1938. From 1943 to 1946 he served as a U.S. Naval officer, in the Pacific Theater, rising to the rank of lieutenant junior grade. He joined the Charlotte News in 1940, becoming sports editor in 1948, and in 1950, he joined the Atlanta Constitution as sports editor. From 1950 to 1968, Bisher was a moderator on the weekly Atlanta TV show, "Football Review." On February 3, 1957 he joined the Atlanta Journal as sports editor and columnist. He also became a columnist for Sporting News. Bisher retired from the Atlanta-Journal Constitution in 2009.
Bisher had articles published in Saturday Evening Post, Sports, True, Sports Illustrated, and other national magazines. His writing was selected for numerous anthologies, including Best Sports Stories of the Year twenty-three times. He received the Georgia AP Sports Writing Award eighteen times, was named Georgia Sportswriter of the Year nineteen times, and won the PGA Lifetime Achievement in Journalism award in 1996. He was inducted into the National Sportscaster and Sportswriters Hall of Fame (1989), the International Golf Writers Hall of Fame (1989), the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (1990), and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (1995).

Scope and Content
This collection primarily consists of notebooks created by Bisher to record sporting events, article ideas, and interviews with various athletes. The notes cover a wide range of sports at the professional and college level. Included are notes covering the World Series, Super Bowl, Masters, Kentucky Derby, and five Olympic games. There are clippings documenting Bisher's column from Charlotte News, Atlanta Journal, and Atlanta Journal Constitution. The research/professional files include clippings, correspondence, and printed materials about the Masters. Also included are certificates and plaques documenting Bisher's successful career.

This collection is organized into four series: notebooks, clilppings, research/professional, photographs/slides, and audiovisual materials.

Conditions Governing Access
Though the collection is open for research, the audiovisual recordings do not have reference copies; however, reference copies are available upon request. Audiovisual research requests are dependent upon the format and condition of the recordings.
