Collection Description

Historical Note

James F. Dever Sr. was postmaster of Rockmart (Ga.) and was appointed Internal Revenue tax collector of the 4th District of Georgia in 1872. He was married to Sarah Jane Blance (1835-1904) daughter of Joseph G. Blance (1799-1854), owner of a slate quarry in Paulding County, Georgia. Their children included Dora, Troupie, James F. Jr. (1872-1924), and Mary Lee (1864-1936) who married Moses C. Hutchings and had a son Forrest Gordon Hutchings. Sarah Jane's brother Joseph A. Blance was a lawyer in Cedartown, Georgia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, printed material, photographs, and financial papers. The correspondence regards the Dever and Blance families, most are business related involving the Post Office, Internal Revenue Office, land transfers, the slate quarry and politics. Financial papers make up the major part of the collection, with deeds to land in Cherokee County (Ga.), which was later divided into Paulding and Polk counties. Several ledgers contain accounts for stores in Rockmart, Van Wert and Blanceville, and two Forrest Hutchings' farm ledgers list accounts for tenants.
