The newspapers in this collection all stemmed from two competing newspapers in Georgia in the mid-1800s: the Southern Banner and the Southern Watchman. In 1882, these two papers merged, becoming the Banner-Watchman. In 1889, the newspapers became known as simply "The Banner." In 1923, the Athens Banner joined with the Athens Herald, another competing paper, to form the Athens Banner-Herald.
This collection contains special edition newspapers printed in Athens, Georgia. The content usually relates to a special occasion, such as Memorial day, Centenniel celebrations, and other various anniversaries related to the city and the University of Georgia. The items date from 1875-1982, with most being from the early 1900s. Many of the items relay information regarding the history of Athens with pictures of important places, including many historic houses that are no longer standing.
