Historical Note
Susan Dowdell Myrick (1893-1978) was born on Dovedale Plantation in Baldwin Country, Georgia, the daughter of Thulia and James Dowdell Myrick. She was a physical education teacher, journalist, artist, and technical advisor for the movie Gone with the Wind. A friendship with author Margaret Mitchell that began at Georgia Press Association meetings led to Mitchell recommending Myrick to be an advisor to filmmakers on accents, dress and customs for the movie.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of correspondence, writings, photographs, printed material and media. Most of the material in the collections concerns Myrick's work as a consultant on the movie Gone with the Wind. The correspondence includes memos to and from Myrick regarding her suggestions on the movie set; the writings include a typescript of the diary Myrick wrote in Hollywood while an advisor for the movie. From her diary Myrick sent back material for her columns in the Macon Telegraph and these columns were edited by Richard Harwell and published in 1982 as White Columns in Hollywood. Also included are examples of the columns and articles Myrick wrote for the Macon Telegraph from 1928 until her retirement in 1967. Photographs are both personal and professional in nature, depicting Myrick and her travels as well as Margaret Mitchell and Gone with the Wind.
