William E. Smith was a printer's apprentice from Darke County, Ohio, who mustered into F Company, Ohio 94th Infantry, U.S. Army, on August 24th, 1862 at the age of eighteen.
The collection consists of correspondence from William E. Smith to his mother from August 21, 1862-March 27, 1865. Correspondence details weather, rumors, marching details, orders and logistics. Smith writes from Murfreesboro and Chattanooga, Tennessee; Graysville, Georgia; Chickamauga Bridge, Tennessee; Resaca and Marietta, Georgia; and camps near the Chattahoochee River and at Jonesborough, Georgia. He also writes from Savannah, Georgia and camp near Goldsboro, North Carolina. The collection also includes a photograph of Smith in civilian clothes and a typescript of the correspondence.
