Historical Note

George C. Marshall (1880-1959) was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. General Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during World War II and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for this.

The collection consists of one letter: dated Fort Benning, Georgia, November 14, 1927, signed by George Marshall, regarding Marshall's new appointment as Assistant Commander of the Infantry School in Fort Benning, Georgia.
