Marcus J. Helms was enlisted in Company K, 19th Georgia Regiment (Kingston Volunteers in the Confederate Army) on June 22, 1861. He resided in Bartow County.
The collection consists of five complete Civil War letters from Marcus J. Helms to his family from November 11, 1861-January 20, 1864. Helms write about cold and rainy weather, rumors and battling. Correspondences are from Occoquan Town, Richmond, and Danville, Virginia, and James Island, South Carolina. The collection also includes three partial letters, and a "Descriptive list Pay and Clothing Account of Private M. J. Helms," dated April 16, 1864.
