Francis Fontaine (1721-1785) studied at William and Mary from 1738 to 1742. After serving an apprenticeship with a carpenter in Williamsburg, he moved to New Bern, North Carolina where he later married and had four children. He was the son of Rev. Francis Fontaine (1697-1749).
The collection consists of papers related to the Fontaine family and related families. These materials were used by Dr. McAlexander to co-write the book, Francis Fontaine, The Builder, 1721-1785 : His ancestors and descendents and their connections / by Hugh McAlexander, Richard Douglas McCrum, Dan Morse Woodliff. The items are mostly genealogical research made up of photocopies, portraits, and published materials. Also included is a copy of the finished book. The arrangement of the collection follows the arrangement of the finished book.
