Historical Note
A native of Griffin, Georgia, John E. Drewry became the second person awarded a B.J. degree from the University of Georgia's journalism program (1922). He received his A.M. degree from UGA (1925) based on graduate work done at Columbia University in New York City and at the University of Georgia. Hired as a journalism instructor at UGA in 1922, Drewry was promoted to Director of the Journalism School in 1932 and - with the creation of the position - took on the role of Dean of the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism; a position he held from 1940 through his retirement in 1969. In a 1982 Athens Banner Herald article, Loren Smith recalled that when John E. Drewry was dean of the Henry Grady School of Journalism, "we all were charmed by his presence, inspired by his intellect and relaxed by his wit".
Scope and Content
The collection consists of correspondence regarding the mental health of Kathleen Drewry, from 1931-1937. Correspondence is mainly between John E. Drewry and Margaret Blair; and Drewry and Dr. W.W. Young, doctor of "diseases of the nervous system," Atlanta, Georgia. There is also correspondence between Kathleen and John, mainly regarding their relationship as husband and wife.
