Congregation Children of Israel is a synagogue located in Athens, Georgia. Congregation Children of Israel Legacy Program, organized in 2001, the Jewish year 5762, was created to record the oral history of temple members.
The collection consists of oral histories of members of Congregation Children of Israel, Athens, Georgia, recorded 2001-2004. There are folders for each person interviewed, a signed consent form, along with a printed transcript of the interview. Some folders contain photographs of the person interviewed, photocopies of newspaper articles, or typewritten notes about the individual; and a written history. Interviewees talk about experiences of being Jewish in America, social conditions, peace for Israel, and temple affiliation. The final folder contains the oral history questionnaire used by Burt Sparer while conducting interviews, and the list of congregants who contributed oral histories.
Though the collection is open for research, the audio recordings do not have reference copies; however, reference copies are available upon request at The Walter J. Brown Media Archives. Audio research requests are dependent upon the format and condition of the recordings.
